Are SUVs More Expensive to Insure?

July 9, 2021
Why Is SUV Auto Insurance More Expensive?

  • SUVs cost more to replace. If an accident totals the vehicle, the insured may pay more for this larger vehicle than a sedan.

  • Some makes and models are more expensive than others. This is due to their value, but also their safety ratings. When buying an SUV, take safety ratings into consideration. Often, safer vehicles cost less to insure.

  • SUVs often have extended features that can add to the value. Those with powerful engines are more expensive to insure because of the cost of replacing those components.

  • Some types of SUVs drive off-road or at a high rate of speed. This makes them riskier vehicles to operate and insure.

  • Some SUVs can be more affordable than luxury vehicles. If the vehicle is considerably safer, for example than a luxury vehicle, you’ll likely spend less.

  • Purchase an SUV with a high safety rating.

  • Select an SUV that’s not at the highest value range. Skip those extras that you may not need.

  • Choose a make and model with built-in safety features.

  • Be sure to keep your driving record in good standing.

  • Maintain a good credit score.

Don’t skip out on buying an SUV because the auto insurance seems to be a bit more. Instead, work with your car insurance agent to get the best rate possible for the vehicle you desire. You’ll find that policies can vary significantly from one insurer to the next. You can always request a quote for a car insurance plan from your agent before you decide to buy the vehicle. That can help you know what to expect.

St. Andrews Insurance can help you get a fast, free quote on auto insurance that will meet your needs. Call us at 850-785-2383 for more information.
